Espresso machine deals here range from about $170 for pod machines to more than $1,700 for super-automatics, from Nespresso, De’Longhi, Jura and Philips. Pick the type first. Pod machines are the simplest and cleanest but tie you to capsules. Manual machines with a portafilter give the most control but need a good grinder and some practice. Super-automatics grind, tamp and brew at the push of a button.

If you drink lattes or cappuccinos, compare the milk system: a steam wand gives the best texture once you learn it, while automatic frothers and milk carafes are easier. Check the size of the water tank and bean hopper, whether the brew group comes out for cleaning, and the cost of descaling and water filters. Nespresso Vertuo and Original capsules don’t fit each other’s machines, so check which system a machine uses.
