Call to Order

Every man keeps one rule about himself that he has never put to the test: he will never own a boat, or never wear the thing on his head. These rules last until the right feature walks into the room, and then they leave quietly, like a guest who has remembered another party. Maple Lane, which keeps its rules in writing, handles such departures in public.

The regular meeting was called to order at seven o'clock by President Mags Delacroix-Burke. The agenda had one item: a pair of Beats Studio Pro headphones in Sand Gray, and the standing vow against headphones of Mr. Wendell Pike, who has carried the lane's mail for twenty-two years and was invited to attend. He arrived, the secretary noted, with his bag still on.

Old Business

The secretary read Mr. Pike's vow, which had hung on the HOA bulletin board and so had never been read by anyone. A carrier, he had written, works with his ears. He knows which screen door sticks and which dog has views. The vow ran one page and was signed twice, in case the first time was a mood.

Roll call followed. The President ruled that the space beneath the porch at No. 2 is an address, entitled to its own notice of meeting, which had been delivered that morning to the edge of the porch. Mr. Ferreira objected that the porch was his and so was whatever was under it. The President replied that occupancy confers standing. Mr. Ferreira said he could build Brenda a better address. The secretary recorded Under 2 as present, since a rustle was audible at roll call, and as abstaining on all votes, which is the right of a domesticated bear and of every other resident of an address.

The Caucus, whose members hold that living with a cat is the highest form of human existence, submitted its Annual Record of Achievement for Admiral Biscuit, which listed Sustained Deliberation on the Hall Rug (nine hours), Defense of the Eastern Armchair (unchallenged), and Presiding Over the Afternoon, eyes closed for reasons of state. Mr. Ferreira asked whether any item on the list was a nap. The Caucus replied that the Admiral does not nap, he adjourns.

The President read the Record aloud in full. It took forty minutes.

Mr. Okonkwo, seated beside Mr. Pike, passed him the headphones during the second item. Mr. Pike put them on, pressed the noise cancelling, and reported that the Record had stopped, though the President's lips continued. He asked that the lips be noted as dedicated.

A carrier, he had written, works with his ears.

New Business

Mr. Okonkwo then presented the Beats Studio Pro, which he described as the quieter way to run a truck. The microphones aim at the speaker's voice and turn down whatever is behind it, which for a man who takes calls beside a fryer is the whole argument. Mrs. Kowalczyk asked about the cushions. He said they are soft and built for long listening, and that a man should not reject a thing before it has touched his head.

Mr. Pike objected that a carrier needs the lane. Mr. Okonkwo pressed the button for Transparency mode. Mr. Pike went still. He named, in order, Mrs. Kowalczyk's pen clicking twice, the radiator-pipe sound of Mr. Ferreira's disapproval, and a rustle beneath the porch at No. 2 arriving through the open window. All of it had come through with music underneath, and none of it had been taken from him. Mrs. Kowalczyk asked which click he liked better. He said the second. She wrote it down.

Mr. Pike then asked about the battery, since a route is a long day. Mr. Okonkwo said it runs up to 40 hours, and that ten minutes on the charger gives up to 4 hours, which Mr. Pike calculated covers a morning and one dog with views. Mrs. Kowalczyk confirmed that the headphones pair with one touch to an Apple phone or an Android phone, borrowed one of each from the floor, and entered both in the Ledger.

Mr. Ferreira asked whether there was a wire. There is: a 3.5 mm cable comes in the box, along with a USB-C charging cable and a woven carrying case. He held the cable at arm's length like a suspect, said he could have braided it better, and coiled it with great care.

ORACLE, asked by the President to forecast the vote, projected that the motion would carry by 2.38 Wendells and that discussion would conclude in 11.46 Thursdays, and Mrs. Delacroix-Burke reserved the community room for all eleven and some of the twelfth. Mr. Ferreira asked what a Wendell was. ORACLE said it was a unit of mail. Mr. Pike, who has been called many things, said he would allow it.

The motion carried six to four at seven fifty-one. Under 2 abstained. The President released the Thursdays.

Adjournment

Mr. Okonkwo noted for the record that the pair is over-ear and will not fit in anyone's pocket. Mr. Pike said he had a bag. He asked that his vow remain posted, amended to include one exception, and that the amendment be read by someone.

The meeting adjourned at seven fifty-six. Mr. Pike walked to the curb in front of No. 2 with the headphones around his neck, Transparency on, and laid a flyer addressed to Occupant, Under 2, at the edge of the porch. He lifted one ear cup and said, to the boards, "Signed for, as always." A rustle was audible. The secretary entered it as a signature.

Previously with Wendell

  • Wendell delivers a cable meant for No. 9 to No. 2 by mistake, and a bylaw about the domesticated bear decides how Doris's laptop gets charged.
  • During a blackout, Gus's homemade battery box and one Anker two-in-one USB-C cable became the only way Maple Lane charged its phones and a laptop.

AI Deal Insight

Selling Point

These wireless headphones offer active noise cancellation, transparency mode, spatial audio, and up to 40 hours of battery life for music and calls.

Trade-offs

Lossless audio requires a wired USB-C connection, so wireless listening does not support lossless playback.

Verdict

Buy if you want long-lasting wireless headphones with ANC and spatial audio; skip if you need lossless audio without a cable.
