Call to Order

Local Shelf Survives Inspection by Retired Librarian, Minutes Confirm.

The meeting was called to order at seven o'clock by President Mags Delacroix-Burke at No. 11, who noted that the agenda had one item, that the item was a science fair entry, and that the entry was leaning.

Old Business

Mr. Pike gave the mail report from the doorway, since he owns no chair on the lane. Mr. Pike reported, gravely, that nothing had arrived for Brenda again, and that he had checked the porch at No. 2 a second time as a courtesy to the domesticated bear. The secretary entered this under Correspondence, where Brenda has a page of her own.

The Cat-Owners' Caucus, whose members hold that sharing a home with a cat is the highest form of human existence, conducted outreach to the Menons, who accepted a pamphlet titled "Have You Considered a Cat?" and remained cheerful. Mrs. Delacroix-Burke asked whether the Menons felt the pull of a higher life. Mr. Menon said they had added it to the spreadsheet. Mrs. Menon said it was on the second tab, under Later. Admiral Biscuit, chair of the Caucus, slept through the outreach and could not be reached for comment.

Mr. Ferreira renewed his standing objection to any tool he did not build himself. The objection was noted.

Mrs. Kowalczyk placed the Lending Ledger on the shelf, all of it, and the shelf declined to have an opinion.

New Business

Ada and Felix Okafor-Lindqvist presented their entry, a freestanding wooden shelf titled Does a Shelf Know? Their hypothesis, delivered in overlapping halves, was that a shelf will hold whatever it has been told it can hold. The shelf wobbled. Mrs. Kowalczyk, appointed judge under a motion she drafted herself, wrote "provisional" on her clipboard and underlined it twice.

The twins are not permitted to operate anything electrical, so the matter went to Mr. Ferreira. He produced a HOTO cordless screwdriver and stated that he had not built it, and would be glad to build a better one. It was pointed out that the kit was already open on the table.

He chose a bit from the twenty-four standard ones, each held to the driver by a magnet, and drove a screw into the back corner of the shelf, the corner where the garage light has never reached. The HOTO's ring of LEDs switched on without being asked and left no shadow anywhere. Mr. Ferreira called this "adequate," in a voice the minutes record as strained.

Electric mode, which is good for up to 4 N·m, set the screws. For the last turn Mr. Ferreira switched to manual mode, which gives up to 8 N·m, and snugged the joint by hand until the wobble was gone. He then let go of the button halfway through a turn, on purpose, in front of witnesses. The bit stopped at once. The screwdriver stayed in his one hand, which he said was the only hand he had planned to use. He asked that the minutes note he could have built that. The minutes so note.

A screw behind the cross brace required the extension rod, 60mm long, and the HOTO reached it. Mrs. Delacroix-Burke asked for the weight of the unit. Mr. Ferreira read it from the box: 700 g. She asked that it be recorded, and it was.

ORACLE, invited to comment, announced that it had solved the problem of screwdrivers falling upward, and recommended that the lane adopt its solution, which was to hold them lower. Nobody present had ever seen a screwdriver fall upward. Mrs. Delacroix-Burke thanked ORACLE for its initiative and moved the recommendation to Miscellaneous, where it keeps a dedicated folder.

Mrs. Menon asked about the battery. Mr. Ferreira said it is a 1500mAh pack and charges through a Type-C port in under 150 minutes. Mr. Menon asked whether a cable comes in the box. It does not. Mr. Ferreira said this was a flaw and then, after a pause, declined to call it one. Mr. Menon opened a new row.

Judging followed. Mrs. Kowalczyk placed the Lending Ledger on the shelf, all of it, and the shelf declined to have an opinion. She added the Menons' binder of spreadsheets and a bag of lemons from the twins' lemonade stand. The shelf held. First place went to the twins, the only place, and the HOTO was entered in the Ledger as lent to Mr. Ferreira until further notice.

Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at seven forty-one. The twins filed a patent for "a shelf that knows." Mr. Ferreira stated that he could build a screwdriver that stops when you let go. He was told, kindly, that one had just done so, and he set the case lid down with the care of a man who had not been listening.

Previously with Gus

  • Gus brought his Anker SOLIX C200 DC to Mags's Readiness Drill for a blackout that never came, while the Caucus tried outreach on the Menons and ORACLE solved a candle shortage.
  • Wendell misreads a smudged label and delivers Gus's Anker power station to the twins, and a bear bylaw, a napping cat and ORACLE's review all shape where it ends up.
