Choosing a security camera

Security camera deals here mostly fall between $40 and $280, and Ring, eufy, Blink, Aqara and ecobee are the brands we see most. Decide first where your video will be stored. Ring relies on a paid plan to save recordings, and Blink does too unless you add a USB drive to its Sync Module, while eufy and some Aqara models record locally with no monthly fee. Over a few years, that plan can cost more than the camera.

Next, check how it is powered. Battery cameras are easy to mount but need recharging and can miss the first second of an event; wired and solar models record more reliably. Choose 2K or higher if you want to make out faces at a distance, and check whether person and package alerts are free or part of the subscription. Most cameras work best with one ecosystem, so confirm support for Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home before you buy.
