A Ring of Gravy on Tile
On the Menons' kitchen tile, eleven inches from the dishwasher, sat a ring of Sunday gravy the size of a saucer and the color of a church pew. It had dried overnight into something with edges. Raj had stood over it with a mop, watched the mop lose, and opened the group chat.
The chat is called "Maple Lane (no politics)" and has never once honored its name.
The Wager Is Posted
Raj: Question for the lane. Priya says the Roborock F25 Ultra can lift dried gravy. I have filed that under "probably." It's in the spreadsheet.
Lou: Dried gravy is a fossil. I have taken it off a truck grill with a chisel and a short prayer. No machine lifts it.
Priya: It puts down steam at 356℉ and hot water at 187℉. Steam is for dried-on messes, hot water is for grease. Gravy is both.
Lou: Wager. One pass and the ring is gone, I host the potluck. Ring stays, the Menons host, and I bring opinions.
Mags: Accepted and entered as Memo 212. I will certify the result in person. Bring the machine.
Mags arrived at seven with a clipboard and the look of a woman who has waited her whole life for two neighbors to put something in writing.
The ring of gravy, which had survived a night, a mop and an apology, was simply not there.
The Chair Must Be Informed
The living room presented a complication. The Cat-Owners' Caucus holds that living with a cat is the highest form of human existence, and its sash of office, laid over the sleeping Admiral Biscuit on the Menons' ottoman, requires that any machine entering the room be announced to the Chair.
Mags stood before the ottoman and read the announcement aloud. It took a minute and a half. The Admiral did not stir, which Mags recorded as consent.
Raj: Can he be moved if he's on the sash?
Mags: The sash may not be moved. The Chair is under the sash. Draw your own conclusions.
Mags then consulted ORACLE, which she keeps on a tablet for moments of doubt. ORACLE announced that under the Larkspur Standard of Gravy Adhesion, Section Nine, dried gravy releases from tile only after forty minutes of sustained eye contact, and that the Standard was ratified at a conference on a ferry.
Priya: Is there a copy of the Standard?
ORACLE: It is held by the Larkspur Society, which meets in Portugal or a large boat.
Mags ruled the Standard binding. Lou and Raj stood over the gravy and looked at it for forty minutes, in silence, while Priya timed them on the oven clock. The gravy did not release. Lou said this proved his case. Mags said it proved the Standard had been misquoted, and that misquoting a ferry is a serious matter.
Blue Light, Then Steam
Priya switched on the Roborock F25 Ultra. Its blue light fell across the floor, and the floor turned out to be a liar. Crumbs lay in a neat crescent along the baseboard, and a drift of orange fur, fine as smoke, ran under the sofa. Mags entered it as Exhibit B and asked who had been keeping house here, the Menons or the Admiral.
The machine has a motor on each wheel and a 70° swivel, and it went around the ottoman in one smooth turn, like a man leaving a pew early. Then it lay back to 180° and slid under the sofa, where Raj had not looked since the move. He looked now. He said nothing for some time, and then he asked Priya to open a new tab.
The 22000 Pa suction took the crumbs and the fur in one step, and the rollers declined to wrap, a real mercy on a floor shared with a cat of the Admiral's output. The Admiral kept sleeping. He has refused to notice vacuum cleaners since before the Caucus was formed.
Then Priya walked it into the kitchen and passed it over the gravy once, with Lou in the doorway, arms folded, like an inspector who has already written the citation.
The ring of gravy, which had survived a night, a mop and an apology, was simply not there.
Lou crouched and ran a thumb over the tile. He looked at the thumb for a while.
Certification and Seating
Mags: Memo 212 is closed. Mr. Okonkwo will host the potluck.
Lou: The steam did it. I want that in the record. The gravy did not lose to a machine. It lost to a better argument.
Priya set the machine on its base, which scrubbed the rollers with 356℉ steam and dried the insides with 203℉ hot air. Lou, who believes a tool must be cleaned by whoever used it last, found nothing left to do and called it the rudest thing a machine had ever done to him.
Being a fair man, he also raised the limits. It weighs 12 pounds, it is for indoor hard floors only, and its battery runs 60 minutes, which Raj noted is about one kitchen, one living room and one reckoning. Raj put all of it on tab two.
Mags counted the lane's pets for the potluck seating chart with a hand clicker: three cats, one beagle, and under No. 2, one domesticated bear, resident, who counted toward the table of twelve but not toward the food.
Lou: Does Brenda get a place card?
Mags: A place card, set at a respectful distance from the porch. No plate.
On the ottoman, the Admiral rolled over, and the sash slid to the floor. Nobody picked it up. Mags went and read him the announcement again.
Lou: Menu's set, by the way. I'm bringing gravy.
Raj: On a plate?
Lou did not answer. He was looking at the tile.

Maple Lane and its residents are fiction. The story was written with AI from the product's listed features and checked automatically. The product, its price and its price history are real. How the stories work
Previously with Raj
- Raj and Priya entered the HOA's Cleanest Car Interior contest with a HOTO handheld vacuum, and the result waited on a gavel only a sleeping Admiral Biscuit was allowed to touch.
- At the swap meet the Menons demonstrated their HOTO BlowVac, Gus distrusted a smart lamp, and a sleeping cat chair stalled the Caucus, so the lane set up a borrowing rotation.
