Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at six forty on the curb in front of No. 7, where a teal Shark Navigator Lift-Away stood upright beside the mailbox cluster with its cord looped over the handle, like a witness awaiting questions. President Mags Delacroix-Burke noted that Raj and Priya Menon were at dinner across town, that Mrs. Kowalczyk had arranged this by reporting an overdue library book, and that the lane had a window of roughly two hours and no plan for the event of a fast dessert.

Present were Mrs. Kowalczyk, Mr. Ferreira, Ms. Oyelaran, Mr. Okonkwo, Admiral Biscuit (asleep on the Menons' front step, which the bylaws count as attending) and ORACLE, by way of the President's phone. The sole item was the surprise: to vacuum the Menons' living room, a gift to two people who measure their days in naps.

Old Business

Mr. Ferreira renewed his standing objection to any vacuum he did not build himself, and added that the Navigator, at 15 pounds, was suspiciously light for a machine with such an opinion of itself. The objection was noted. Mrs. Kowalczyk confirmed the machine had come from her own closet under Lending Ledger entry 1,207.

The President reported a near miss. ORACLE had been asked to remind the group chat about the surprise, and it did, addressing the message to "Mr. Pennington of No. 7," and when corrected three times it replied that it had known Mr. Pennington for years and would not be taking questions.

Mr. Menon answered within minutes to say that no Pennington lives at No. 7 and the message had surely been meant for another lane. Mrs. Menon said she would add it to a second tab. The secret held. The President moved to thank ORACLE for its discretion, and the motion carried over Ms. Oyelaran's silence.

The brushroll cleans itself, Ms. Oyelaran reported, which she described as the first appliance feature she had ever wished to see in a person.

New Business

The first item was the key. It lives in a coffee tin at the edge of the crawlspace beneath the porch at No. 2. The President ruled that the space is a separate address, Under Porch, No. 2, with its own standing, and that the coffee tin lying inside it could not be removed until written notice had been served on the resident, Brenda, the lane's domesticated bear. The notice was read aloud toward the lattice. No objection was received, and by custom silence was entered as consent. Eleven minutes were lost. Mr. Ferreira retrieved the tin with a rake handle from a respectful distance, and said he could build a better porch.

Mr. Okonkwo took the rug. He reported that the swivel steering carried the machine around the coffee table and into the corner by the radiator without anyone lifting it, which he valued because his truck has never once forgiven a wide turn. He added that the sealed system and HEPA filter hold dust inside the machine. He had expected a cloud and felt, briefly, unemployed.

Mr. Ferreira took the bookshelf wall. He detached the pod from the body and sent it beneath the shelf, where it retrieved a quantity of dust he declined to describe, citing the family audience. He then said he could build a pod like that. He was asked to keep going.

The brushroll cleans itself, Ms. Oyelaran reported, which she described as the first appliance feature she had ever wished to see in a person. Mrs. Kowalczyk asked about hair, given the Admiral's visits to the Menons' sofa. Ms. Oyelaran said the brushroll is built to pick up pet hair without wrapping it, and that she had read the manual. She did not say it twice.

Mrs. Kowalczyk used the upholstery tool on the lampshades and curtains, and the pet crevice tool between the couch cushions, where she recovered one button, two pens and a library receipt, which she logged. It was for the book she had used as her pretext. She entered the coincidence under Miscellaneous and did not look up.

A question then arose over the armchair by the window, which bears a dent in the shape of a visiting cat. A delegate of the Caucus, whose members hold that living with a cat is the highest form of human existence, cited the Edict of Sardine Lane and eleven centuries of feline precedent, none of which Mrs. Kowalczyk could locate, to rule that a chair once napped upon belongs to the napper forever. The armchair was vacuumed last, around the dent, with the Caucus's blessing. The Admiral slept through the ruling, which the Caucus recorded as a unanimous vote in his favor.

One limitation was entered into the record. The Navigator is corded, so the work moved from outlet to outlet, and at 80 db the committee conducted most of its business by pointing.

Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at eight thirty-eight, two minutes before the Menons' car turned onto the lane. The vacuum was back at the curb, upright and teal, its cord wound tighter than Mrs. Kowalczyk's smile.

Raj and Priya Menon entered a living room that had been dealt with and stood in it for some time. Raj opened the spreadsheet on his phone, found a row titled "Vacuum, living room" marked Pending, and handed the phone to Priya, who typed Done. ORACLE, still on the President's phone, said, "Congratulations, Mr. Pennington."

Priya asked who that was. ORACLE said it would be in the second tab. Raj created the tab. It currently has one row, titled "Find out," and it is marked Pending.

Previously with Raj

  • Lou bet that a vacuum mop could not lift a dried ring of gravy from the Menons' tile, and Mags ran the test around a sleeping cat in a ceremonial sash.
  • Raj and Priya entered the HOA's Cleanest Car Interior contest with a HOTO handheld vacuum, and the result waited on a gavel only a sleeping Admiral Biscuit was allowed to touch.

Selling Point

This vacuum suits pet owners with its self-cleaning brushroll and includes a pet crevice tool for removing hair from furniture and stairs.

Trade-offs

As a lift-away upright design, it requires manual detachment to clean stairs and furniture rather than cordless convenience.

Verdict

Buy if you have pets and want a traditional upright with allergen filtration; skip if you prefer cordless or robotic cleaning.
