A noise feud between No. 2 and No. 4 ended at an HOA hearing when a new Roku TV did what a plywood wall could not.

A Box Mistaken for Supper

Wendell Pike, who has carried the mail on Maple Lane for twenty-two years, admitted Tuesday that he mistook the box for a casserole dish.

"It had that feel," he said. "Flat, heavy, and somebody's feelings inside." He can normally identify a parcel by its rattle. This one did not rattle, and he took the silence personally.

It was a Roku 55-inch Plus Series television, 27.4 pounds, addressed to Gus Ferreira at No. 2. Mr. Ferreira signed for it with the expression of a man accepting a summons. "Signed for, as always," Mr. Pike said, and went on to No. 3, though he reports he looked back.

Fence Notes, Fully Footnoted

The delivery was the latest chapter in a dispute between No. 2 and No. 4 that residents have followed the way other towns follow a zoning case.

Mr. Ferreira watches late games at a volume his old set could produce only by being thumped. Doris Kowalczyk, whose bedroom faces his fence, began logging the thumps in the Lending Ledger under a new heading: "Items Returned Involuntarily."

Her notes were polite and footnoted. His reply was a plywood baffle, eight feet long, bolted along the fence line. "I could build that," he told Mr. Pike, meaning quiet. Mrs. Kowalczyk answered with a card reading, in full, "Thank you. It is still audible."

Nobody raised a voice. The lane simply learned to read the card. By Friday, the card had been quoted at the mailbox cluster more often than the weather.

The fence went quiet in a way that Doris described, after consulting her Ledger, as unprecedented.

The Hearing Under Section Nine

President Mags Delacroix-Burke called a hearing at the community mailbox cluster and issued Memo 212 to announce it. She opened by noting that the baffle was a problem before the volume was.

Section nine of the bylaws requires an unobstructed sightline between the porch at No. 2 and the street, a provision written for the domesticated bear who lives beneath it, and the plywood baffle blocked it entirely. Brenda watched from the edge of the porch and was not consulted, as the section does not require it. The baffle was ordered down before any ruling on sound could be made, and Mr. Ferreira unbolted it himself, muttering that it had been a fine baffle.

Seeking an impartial judge of quiet, Mrs. Delacroix-Burke accepted a bid from the Cat-Owners' Caucus. The Cat-Owners' Caucus, whose members hold that sharing a home with a cat is the highest form of human existence, offered as its credentials a record of achievements that included Eleven Hours Holding the Front Window, the Siege of the Warm Laundry and the Defense of the Sunny Rug, each of which, on inspection, was a nap. The Caucus was seated. Admiral Biscuit, its chair, slept through the testimony, and his ruling was entered as "no objection," which satisfied nobody.

ORACLE, asked for the standard volume limit on a cul-de-sac, cited the Pemberton Survey of Quiet, in which Dr. Pemberton measured every lane in the nation from a rowboat, and recommended that Mr. Ferreira move his television to the garage. Mrs. Delacroix-Burke asked that the rowboat be entered as an exhibit.

Mr. Ferreira said his recliner would not fit in the garage. The hearing recessed so that he could demonstrate a better arrangement.

Setup Took Less Than the Hearing

The Roku was out of its box and standing on its included stands in a few minutes, which Mr. Ferreira described as suspicious. He noted that it could also hang on a wall mount, and that he could build one. Nobody doubted him, and nobody asked.

Then the remote went missing. The set's lost remote finder, which the manufacturer says is a match for even the deepest couch cushions, located it in his deepest couch cushion. "I could have built a finder," he said, and looked at the cushion as if it had been in on it.

The screen is a 55-inch Mini-LED panel with QLED color and Dolby Vision, and it laid out the pregame in so much detail that Mr. Ferreira reported, with some alarm, "That is a lot of grass." He then asked who had been mowing it.

Then came the part that ended the matter. Mrs. Delacroix-Burke read from the sheet that the set can send its sound to Bluetooth headphones, so that a person may listen without waking the house. Mr. Ferreira put on a pair. The game played. The Dolby Atmos speakers and the built-in subwoofer, which had been the rumored cause of all the trouble, stood by with nothing to say.

He also found the star key, which turns the display off and keeps the audio playing. He used it to hear the postgame show from his kitchen while the screen stayed dark, a feature he said he had never wanted and now could not do without.

Quiet at No. 4

The fence went quiet in a way that Doris described, after consulting her Ledger, as unprecedented. She crossed to No. 2 that evening and stood at his door. Mr. Ferreira, in headphones, did not hear her knock, which was the point.

She waited eleven minutes. Through the window she watched him lean toward the screen, shout "Go!" at no one, and produce no sound at all that reached the porch. Mr. Pike, passing on the sidewalk, said he had never seen her so moved.

Mr. Ferreira eventually noticed her and lifted one ear cup. He told her the set suits anyone who watches after the rest of the house has gone to bed, and anyone who wants setup that takes minutes. He added, because she would have asked, that the screen refreshes at 60 hertz, and that a person who wants faster should check the sheet first.

Mrs. Kowalczyk handed over a casserole dish, which Mr. Pike identified at once by the way it sat in her hands. Mr. Ferreira took it with both hands and put the headphones back on.

On the lid was a card. It read, in full, "Thank you. It is inaudible."
